Keep your papers

Signing in attaches the paper you just formatted to your account, so you can find it again. Your manuscript never leaves our server either way — only a record of the run is stored.

Formatting and previewing are free. An account lets you download your paper as a watermarked PDF, free, and keeps it here so you can find it again.

    Help

What this does, and what it deliberately does not.

    What happens to your paper

We open the journal’s own Word template and pour your writing into it, so the layout is theirs rather than our imitation of it. Your words are never changed — nothing is rewritten, summarised or generated.

    How long files are kept

Both files you upload and the formatted result are deleted automatically after 7 days. You can delete them sooner from the result screen. The record of the run is kept so you can see what was done, and it carries no copy of your manuscript.

    What it does not do

It does not write cover letters, convert citation styles, rewrite references, look up DOIs, or accept LaTeX or PDF files. It formats a .docx manuscript into a .docx template.

    Which journals it works with

Any journal that gives you a usable .docx template. Nothing depends on us having your journal in a list — you supply the template, so the layout is the journal’s own.

Can I undo an individual change?

Not here. You get a list of what was changed and you can preview the result before you download, but changes cannot be reversed one at a time inside ManuscriptFix. Your original file is never altered, so the way back is to edit the downloaded document in Word.

    Always check the result

Open the formatted file in Word before you submit it. This is new software and a journal’s template can do unusual things.

Your paper, and the Word template the journal gives you.

Both as .docx. We open the journal’s own template and pour your writing into it, so the layout is theirs, not our imitation of it. Your words are never changed — nothing is rewritten, summarised or generated.

Don’t have it yet? It comes from the journal, not from us — look on their Instructions for authors, Submission guidelines or Manuscript preparation page for a Word template. A PDF of the guidelines is not the template.

    Options

Some templates are specimen articles whose running head still carries the original author’s name. Ticking this replaces just that text with your first author. Headers are otherwise never touched.

    What went wrong?

Your manuscript is not sent. We already have the paper on the server — this reports which one, and what looks wrong with it.

The editable Word file costs 20 credits — US$9 buys 100, which is five papers. The watermarked PDF is free, and re-downloading a paper you have already paid for never costs again.

Your original file was never changed.

You have your file. Nothing else is needed — you can close this page. If the download did not appear, check your browser’s downloads, then press the download button again.

Download it first — both files you uploaded and the formatted result are deleted automatically after 7 days. You can delete them now instead.

    Why this exists

    You wrote a paper.
Now a template wants it re-done.

None of it is research. All of it has to be done. And you do the whole thing again for the next journal.

    📕

Every journal wants it its own way

Different headings, different reference style, different order. You read the rules, then you do it all by hand.

    🔁

    Rejected? Start again

Rejected on Friday, sending it somewhere else on Monday. New template, new reference style. All of it, again.

    📋

Sent back before anyone reads it

A missing statement. A table nothing points to. Six weeks waiting, then it comes back from an editor who never got to the science.

    Inside a run

You can see everything we changed.

Look before you download. You see the formatted paper next to your own, your file stays exactly as you wrote it, and you can delete everything the moment you want to.

    How it works

    Three steps. About a minute.

No list of journals to search through. You already have what we need: your paper, and the template the journal gave you.

    1

    Give us two Word files

Your finished paper, and the journal’s template. Both as .docx. That is all we need.

    2

    We read the template

We work out how that journal wants headings, spacing, references and section order — then put your paper into it.

    3

    You check it and download

Every change is listed. Put back anything you disagree with, then download your paper, title page and blind copy.

Word only. We do not take PDF or LaTeX — a PDF cannot be re-laid out honestly, so we would rather not pretend.

    Two products, one login

    Two things we do

Plain names for exactly what they do. Formatting is ready now. Validation is nearly there.

    Formatting

Give us your paper and the journal’s template. Get back a paper that already fits it.

    • Any journal at all — you upload its Word template, so nothing depends on us having it
    • Reference list formatted to the template’s own font, size, indent and spacing — we do not convert between citation styles
    • Title page and blind copy split into separate files for you
    • Tables, equations and cross-references stay working, not flattened into pictures
    • A short report telling you what still needs your attention before you submit
    The promise

    We show you every change.
Your own file is never touched.

Done and checked, without asking you anything

Reference formatting, section order, heading levels, title page, line numbers, line spacing, fonts, margins, table layout and where captions go.

    The rest

    Asked about, never guessed at

An abstract that is too long. A heading that could sit at two levels. A citation with no reference to match it. We would rather ask you than be quietly wrong.

    ✍️

We change the look, not your findings

We do not write, rewrite, shorten or interpret anything. We change how it looks. What it says stays yours.

    🧾

You can see everything we changed

Every change is listed, and you can compare the result against your original before you download. Your own file is never altered.

    What this actually saves you.

Measured on the live service with real journal submissions of 5,600 to 15,300 words: fastest 3 seconds, slowest 13. Doing the same job by hand takes one to two hours, and longer if the template is fussy.

    Honest answers

    Things you might be wondering

Is it okay to use this — will a journal mind?

No, journals do not mind. We change how your paper looks, never what it says. That is the same kind of help a copy-editor or a typesetting service gives, and every major publisher allows it. We never write, reword, shorten or interpret your science, and you see every change listed before you download anything.

What happens to my unpublished paper?

It travels to us over an encrypted connection and is kept apart from every other run, and deleted for good after 7 days — or straight away, if you press delete. We never use it to train anything. Your files are processed on our own server and deleted after seven days; the privacy notice sets out exactly what is kept and what is not.

How much does it get right?

We do not publish an accuracy percentage, because we have not yet measured one we would be willing to defend in front of a reviewer. We would rather say that than pick a number that sounds good. What we do promise is checkable in the file itself: your own file is never altered, you get a new one to open and check, and not one word of your science is rewritten. Decisions only you can make — an abstract over the limit, a heading that could sit at two levels, a citation with no reference to match it — are flagged and we suggest a fix. A confident wrong answer would cost you more time than an honest question.

    Which files can I upload?

Word .docx only, for both your paper and the journal’s template. Older .doc files are not accepted — open one in Word and “Save As” .docx first. We do not take PDF or LaTeX. A PDF is a picture of a finished page, not a document you can honestly re-lay out, so we would rather say no than hand you something broken. Your original file is never changed — everything you download is a new file.

What is Validation, and when can I use it?

It is the second thing we do, and it is nearly ready. You paste the journal’s author instructions — the whole page, however long — and we go through them line by line, work out which rules can actually be checked in a document, and check your paper against every one of them. You get a results page grouped into length, sections, required statements, references, authors, tables and layout, plus your paper back marked up in Word: small fixes as tracked changes you accept or reject, and anything we should not decide for you highlighted with a comment explaining it. It will never write a citation, a reference or a declaration for you — choosing which source backs up a sentence is your claim to make, not ours. Join the list and you get it first.

    Do you have my journal?

There is no list, so there is nothing to be missing from. You upload the Word template the journal gives its authors, and we work from that. It means any journal works from day one — including a new one, a small one, or your department’s own house style.
