Invited beta. Everything is free while we test — formatting, previewing and downloading — and no payment details are asked for. Journal templates vary enormously, so an unusually complex one may format imperfectly or need manual review. Always open the result in Word before you submit it, and tell us when something looks wrong.

Why this exists

You wrote a paper.
Now a template wants it re-done.

None of it is research. All of it has to be done. And you do the whole thing again for the next journal.

Every journal wants it its own way

Different headings, different reference style, different order. You read the rules, then you do it all by hand.

Rejected? Start again

Rejected on Friday, sending it somewhere else on Monday. New template, new reference style. All of it, again.

Sent back before anyone reads it

A missing statement. A table nothing points to. Six weeks waiting, then it comes back from an editor who never got to the science.

Inside a run

You can see everything we changed.

Nothing is hidden. You see each change, and what needs your eye, before you download.

Your paper is ready Changes madeItems to look at
⚑ Anything over a stated limitFlagged for you to shorten — we will not rewrite your science
✓ ReferencesEvery entry laid out to match the template’s reference formatting. Citation-style conversion and reference rewriting are not supported.
✓ StatementsFunding, ethics, conflict of interest and data availability — all there
✓ Order and headingsSections put in the order the template states, headings set the way the template does them
How it works

Three steps.

No list of journals to search through. You already have what we need: your paper, and the template the journal gave you.

1

Give us two Word files

Your finished paper, and the journal’s template. Both as .docx.

2

We read the template

We work out how that journal wants headings, spacing, references and section order — then put your paper into it.

3

You check it and download

Every change is listed. Preview it free, as often as you like, then download.

Word only. We do not take PDF or LaTeX — a PDF cannot be re-laid out honestly, so we would rather not pretend. .docx only: save a .doc as .docx in Word first.

What we do

Formatting is ready to use today. Validation is the next thing we are building.

01

Formatting

Give us your paper and the journal’s template. Get back a paper that already fits it.

  • ✓ Most journals that give you a usable .docx template
  • ✓ Reference layout and typography matched to the template
  • ✓ Tables, equations and cross-references stay working
  • ✓ A short report of what still needs your attention
Coming next

Validation

Paste the journal’s author instructions. Find out what would get your paper sent back — before you send it.

  • — Paste the whole page, any length
  • — Length, sections, required statements, layout
  • — Red, green, amber. No made-up score

Approved members hear about it first.

Honest answers

Things you might be wondering

Will a journal mind that I used this?
No. We change how your paper looks, never what it says. That is the same kind of help a copy-editor or typesetting service gives. We never write, reword, shorten or interpret your science, and every change is listed before you download.
What happens to my unpublished paper?
It is written to disk on a server we operate, kept apart from other runs, and processed there by our own software. It is not sent to any other company — not to our sign-in provider, not to our payment provider, and not to any external service for processing. The manuscript and every file made from it are deleted seven days after the run, whether or not you delete them yourself, and you can delete them sooner from the result screen. What remains afterwards is the record only: the file name, the paper’s title, the date and whether it succeeded.

Never used to train anything. There is no training pipeline of any kind in this system, so there is nothing for your work to be fed into.

And what we do not claim. Files are encrypted in transit; they are not encrypted at rest during those seven days, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. The service has not been independently audited. People who operate the server can technically reach a file before it is deleted. Authorised ManuscriptFix staff open a paper’s files only to investigate a problem; each time they must state a reason, and the access is recorded in an audit log that cannot be edited. If your work is embargoed or patent-related, write to hello@manuscriptfix.com before uploading.
Can I undo an individual change?
Not inside ManuscriptFix. You get a list of what was changed, and you can compare the original with the formatted version before you download — but changes cannot be reversed one by one here. Your original file is untouched, so the honest way back is to edit the downloaded document in Word.
Which files can I upload?
.docx only, for both your paper and the template. If you have a .doc, open it in Word and use Save As to make a .docx. We do not accept PDF or LaTeX — a PDF cannot be re-laid out honestly.
How much does it get right?
We do not publish an accuracy percentage, because we have not measured one we would be willing to defend in front of a reviewer — and a number that sounds good is worth less to you than an honest answer. What we do handle without asking you anything: reference style, section order, heading levels, title page, line spacing, fonts, margins, table layout and where captions go. The rest is the part we will not guess at — an abstract that is over the limit, a heading that could sit at two levels, a citation with nothing in the reference list to match. Those are flagged for you rather than decided for you.
What does it cost?
Nothing during the beta. Approved researchers start with 100 free credits — five Word downloads — and the watermarked PDF is always free. If you run out, write to hello@manuscriptfix.com. Pricing will be announced before anything is ever charged.
What is Validation, and when can I use it?
Validation reads a journal’s author instructions and tells you what would get your paper sent back. It is not built yet and we will not take money for it until it is.
Do you have my journal?
We do not need to. You upload the journal’s own Word template, so nothing depends on us having it in a list.

ManuscriptFix · Help

How can we help?

Type a word — credits, template, download — or browse the questions below.

1Upload two filesYour paper and the journal’s Word template, both .docx.
2We format it — freeYour writing goes into the journal’s own template. Your words are never changed.
3Check, then downloadRead the preview and the report, then take the PDF or the Word file.
Getting started
What do I need to format a paper?
Two Word files: your finished paper and the journal’s own template, both in .docx. Open New paper, choose both, and press Format.
How do I sign in? I have no password.
There is no password. Sign in with Google, or ask for a one-time link sent to your email address. Access is by invitation: your email has to be approved first.
Does ManuscriptFix change my words?
No. We open the journal’s own template and pour your writing into it. Your words are never changed, and the report lists everything that was.
Credits and downloads
What costs credits and what is free?
  • Formatting a paper — free
  • Previewing — free, as often as you like
  • Watermarked PDF download — free
  • Editable Word download — 20 credits, once per paper
If I download the same Word file twice, am I charged twice?
No. The 20 credits are taken once per paper. Downloading that paper again within its 7 days costs nothing more.
I have run out of credits. What now?
Write to hello@manuscriptfix.com and we will reply by email. The PDF download stays free.
Your files
How long are my files kept?
For 7 days after formatting. During that time you can download them again from My papers. After that the files are deleted and only the file name, date and status remain.
Can I delete my files sooner?
Yes. Press Delete my files now on the result page straight after formatting. This cannot be undone.
Who can see my manuscript?
Your manuscripts never leave our own server, and they are deleted after 7 days.
When something looks wrong
Which templates work?
Most journal templates work. Some do not, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise: a template with an unusual layout — heavy use of text boxes, a complicated masthead, or an unusual caption or reference convention — may format imperfectly and need manual review. We do not guarantee perfect formatting or journal acceptance.
My file was refused. Why?
Only .docx files are accepted. An encrypted, corrupt or password-protected file is refused outright rather than half formatted. Open the file in Word, save it again as .docx, and try once more.
The result is wrong. How do I tell you?
Open the formatted file in Word before you submit it. If something is wrong, use Report a problem beside the download buttons — it sends the job id and your short note, never your manuscript.
What does ManuscriptFix not do?
No cover letters, no citation-style conversion, no reference rewriting, no DOI lookup, no LaTeX or PDF input. .docx only.

Nothing matches that. Clear the box to see every question, or email us below.
